About Hyman’s Auto Supply

Family owned and operated for 98 years and counting. In 1927 Morris Hyman opened Hyman’s Auto Supply on the 8600 block of Commercial Avenue in Chicago. Four generations later, that same business is still thriving, continuing to grow in the same location while surviving both the Great Depression and World War II.

Today Hyman’s Auto Supply is owned and operated by Morris’s grandchildren — Dennis and Marty Hyman. For many years, brothers Rick and Marty kept offices in what used to be their grandfather’s family living quarters. We honor the memory of Rick Hyman, who has since passed away.

Since 1927, Hyman’s has opened six other Specialty Paint locations in Illinois and Indiana, becoming one of the largest independent automotive finish wholesalers in the Midwest. In 1980, Hyman’s also opened Hyman’s Ace Hardware. In 1990, Rick Hyman launched the E-Z MIX brand thanks to his invention of the disposable mixing cup. E-Z MIX has since expanded its line of paint products and accessories, shipping worldwide from the same 8600 block in Chicago.

In 1999, Rick’s son Jon joined the company to manage the Mishawaka location. A decade later, Marty’s daughter Lauren (Hyman) Tetrick joined the E-Z MIX side of the business. In 2011, Marty’s son Ian began in the shipping department under his uncle Steve, later taking over warehouse management when Steve retired in 2015. In 2014, Marty’s son David also joined as part of the sales team.

There’s a rich history within our walls. In the 1930s, employees earned $15 a week, and in the 1940s during World War II, Morris provided lunch for his salesmen so they could use more of their wages to support their families. Morris managed the company until the 1950s, when his son Irving took over. After the passing of Morris and Irving, leadership went to Irving’s wife, Maxine, who asked their four sons to manage the business together.

Since then, Hyman’s has supported its community through local parades, little leagues, and industry clinics. For nearly a century, we have remained committed to Morris’s original vision: fair prices, quality goods, and excellent service.
